At Olson Orthodontics we try our very best to make every patient’s orthodontic experience as easy and fun as possible. If you have a child who is going back to school with braces, here are some helpful tips we’ve put together to make the transition as smooth and stress-free as possible!

1. Stay prepared with a braces care kit. Some of the best items to have in this kit are:
• A soft bristled toothbrush
• Fluoride toothpaste
• Dental floss
• Dental wax
• Lip balm

2. Keep snacks and lunches braces-friendly and avoid broken brackets! Foods that are too sticky, crunchy or chewy should be avoided because they have the potential to break wires and brackets. Healthy snacks like yogurt and applesauce are always a great, braces-friendly way to supplement lunch.

3. Purchase a mouthguard for your student athlete. If your child has braces and also plays sports, or has gym class, you may want to consider investing in an orthodontic mouthguard. Sports and other physical activity can increase the risk of braces being damaged or your child’s cheeks, gums, or mouth being injured.

4. Drink Water. Consuming water frequently helps remove bacteria and particles from brackets and the surface of teeth.

5. Brush after meals and snacks. The school restroom is the best place to get brushing done right. If you can fit in a quick brushing after lunch or any snack consumed during the day, you’ll be well on your way to a healthy new smile!
