One of the most common questions we hear is, “Why are my teeth moving? I had braces years ago!”
The truth is, teeth are never completely “finished” moving. Even after orthodontic treatment, natural changes continue throughout life. The good news? A few simple habits can help keep your smile looking great for years to come.
Why do teeth shift?
Several factors can contribute to tooth movement over time, including:
- Natural aging. As we age, subtle changes in our bite and jaw can cause teeth to drift.
- Everyday forces. Chewing, clenching, grinding, and even tongue pressure can gradually move teeth.
- Wisdom teeth? While wisdom teeth don’t usually cause crowding, they can sometimes contribute to changes if there isn’t enough space.
- Not wearing your retainer. This is by far the most common reason we see teeth shift after braces or Invisalign® treatment.
Why are retainers so important?
Orthodontic treatment moves teeth into their ideal positions, but the surrounding bone and tissues need ongoing support to help maintain those results. Retainers are designed to do exactly that.
Today’s recommendation is simple:
Wear your retainer for life.
For many patients, that means wearing it every night while sleeping. It’s a small commitment that helps protect the investment you’ve made in your smile.
What if my retainer doesn’t fit?
Don’t force it.
If your retainer feels tight, won’t seat completely, or has been lost or broken, contact our office. In many cases, we can fabricate a replacement retainer before additional tooth movement occurs. If your teeth have shifted more significantly, we can discuss simple treatment options to get your smile back on track.
